Why does Tom wake up at 2 AM with heartburn? What is the physiology behind the heartburn?

the sphincter on your esophagus relaxes and the HCl acid could regurgitate. it's often induced by eating big meals especially before bedtime.

How do you know it's heart burn. He needs to be checked out. Don't ever mistake heart burn for heart trouble . Most people that have heart attacks have them early in the morning. If it's not heart burn and he has artery trouble one day it may be to late . Im not trying to scare you but really precaution is the best answer just incase.
