1. The most common cause of heartburn in a normally healthy person is overeating. If you take your time over a meal, you are unlikely to overindulge. Gulping down your food however is likely to cause you to overeat because your brain does not get time to signal that you are full.
2. If you are suffering heartburn, do not lie down. Lying down will cause the stomach acid to overflow and the pain will be worse. If you must lie down, lie with your head and shoulders elevated.
3. Avoid cigarette smoke.
4. Fizzy drinks can have the same effect as overeating.
5. Greasy, fried, fatty foods cause the overproduction of stomach acids and they tend to sit in your stomach for a long time. Avoid these foods to avoid heartburn.
6. Do you have a spare tyre around your waist? Rolls of fat can constrict your stomach and the acid will over flow. Lose some weight and you may find relief.
7. Never eat within 2 1/2 hours of bedtime. Lying down with a full stomach will cause the stomach acids to overflow and you will get experience discomfort.
8. Stress can cause the overproduction of stomach acids. Try taking up yoga for an all over win. Yoga will exercise your body and help to keep that waistline under control, while it relaxes your mind.
9. Bend at the knees when lifting. If you bend at the waist, you are constricting your stomach and causing the acid to overflow. Bending at the knees is also good for your back.
10. Avoid chocolate. Chocolate contains fat and caffeine, which stimulate the overproduction of stomach acids. Milk, beer, wine and tomatoes should also be avoided.

Tums and stuff like that aren’t working? Try taking more medicine like Tums after four hours of when you last took something. Tums always work great for me.

Point #8 about stress is a very good one. Stress will make this condition considerably worse!
