Heartburn which is caused by certain foods can turn from rare episodes into chronic ailments in a short space of time if the root cause of the acid reflux symptoms is not diagnosed and eliminated.
In the case of chronic reflux sufferers doctors warn against eating foods which are commonly known to cause heartburn.

Which foods cause heartburn? Some of the common heartburn inducing foods includes certain spices, onion, garlic, horse radish. Drinks include soft drinks and alcohol and even fruit juice in some cases. These foods and drinks are likely to bring about acid reflux symptoms in potential sufferers or people prone to GERD and acid reflux.

There are however other foods that may seem harmless but after you eat them can bring about serious heartburn attacks. These include ice cream and any other food which contains unnatural additives and chemicals. For this reason you should stick to fresh foods as much as possible.

In such cases it is not always the food that causes heartburn but the additives that is contained in the food. So how do you know what is safe? Sometimes you just won’t know until you try it.

Dairy products are known to increase your levels of stomach acid. Things like cream, ice cream, milk shakes and other items with dairy content can be disastrous for heartburn sufferers. On the other hand you might find yogurt to be friendly to your system.

In most cases vegetables won’t cause severe acid reflux.
Some foods such as tomatoes, onion, leek, celery or radishes may also increase the acid level in your stomach. A short period of observation is a good idea when you are trying to treat heartburn by altering your diet.

It is a good idea to record everything you eat over a two week period and any effects you notice with each food. Over time you will see some patterns emerging which you can then use in your fight against heartburn.
