Can Fruit Give You Heartburn?

Some people experience indigestion and heartburn after eating certain fruits. But is it the fruit causing the problem, or an underlying condition?

There are two types of fruit which may cause symptoms of heartburn in some people: citrus fruits (e.g. orange, lime, lemon) and tomatoes.

Since people react in different ways to various types of food, it certainly can’t be said that fruit is a major cause of heartburn. Often the way people eat, and the amount they eat, has a considerable impact on whether they experience discomfort. But if you believe citrus fruits may be contributing to your indigestion, it is best to eliminate them for at least one month to see if it makes a difference.

Fruits That Can Help Relieve Heartburn

There is no doubt – fruit is healthy. Eating fruit is a must for all of us, and there are even some fruits which have shown to HELP relieve the pain and discomfort of heartburn and indigestion. Which ones are they?

Papaya
Papaya is a powerfully healthy fruit. It is particularly good for digestion due to the enzyme it contains called papain. There are some heartburn relief products that have papaya seed extract in them for this reason. But going straight to the source is the sure way to know that you are getting all the raw, natural benefits of this fruit, to assist with your heartburn problems and your general health. Papaya is a strongly alkaline fruit which helps the body to balance acidity. This is vital for the relief and avoidance of heartburn, indigestion and other digestive issues.
You can eat the papaya fruit whole or purchase papaya extract online or in health food stores.

If the fruit is acidic, then you can get heartburn from it. I would suggest you have your doc look into this because it might be acid reflux which can cause scaring of the esophagus.

Not unusual, especially fruit that is acidic like pineapple or citrus. Welcome to getting old!
