Acid reflux or heartburn is most often described as an unpleasant acid sensation that rises in the chest and goes up the food pipe. Its cause is the gastric acid that refluxes in the esophagus provoking the pains that in many cases are very similar to asthma. The causes of temporary or chronic heartburn are very numerous and often rooted in the person’s style of life: junk food, fizzy drinks, coffee, smoking or too much stress are only a few of them. Unfortunately for would-be mums, heartburn during pregnancy is one of the many symptoms a woman has to face before bringing a child into the world. Sometimes heartburn can be a sign of pregnancy. Some women experience severe heartburn during pregnancy whilst others only have heartburn in early pregnancy or first trimester.
